Course Overview

This course is intended to deepen your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of art. We will be studying art's definition, form, media and it's historic and cultural meanings. After completing this course, if you apply yourself to the content, you can expect to accomplish these goals:

  • describe the content and form of art;
  • discuss the relationship between major historic and stylistic movements in art;
  • effectively use terminology appropriate to the description visual elements, stylistic concerns and design components;
  • describe techniques and materials used to create 2 and 3 dimensional art from drawing to architecture;
  • identify key works by various artists and understand their historic and stylistic relevance.
Required Reading

In order to succeed in this class you must stay current on the reading assignments. Practice active reading as you prepare for class: make notes and questions about what you are reading, highlight important phrases. The lectures do not substitute for your careful reading of assignments. The course text book is Prebles' Artforms and should be available at the bookstore.

There are four exams during the course. Each exam covers material in your book and anything I present during lecture, too. Exams 1 & 2 will be multiple choice and slide identification. Exams 3 & 4 will be short answer, slide identification and essay. Each exam is worth 50 points.
